"Ko Bino Smith taku ingoa. My name is Bino Smith. I am a self-taught multi medium artist from Aotearoa, New Zealand. I am of Maori/Croatian decent and was brought up on my marae in Hongoeka Bay, Porirua, Wellington. My tribal connections are Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Raukawa, Te Ati Awa, Ngāti Kahungunu. And Tainui, Tokomaru and Takitimu being my canoes.
Many of my inspirations come from my strong Māori heritage, and the values our culture upholds, and the Māori way of seeing the world (holistically). As with all indigenous cultures, Māori still retain a close connection to Papatuanuku (Mother Earth) and our many gods.
I feel truly humbled to have been involved on such epic New Zealand-made movies such as "The Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong" as a set finisher and learnt so many other techniques in carving and painting - adding to my different mediums and materials: Carving (Polyutherane Surfboards, Oamaru Limestone, Wood, Beef & Whale Bone and Pounamu - Jade). I also spray paint, hand paint and airbrush. I have a few different approaches to each medium but the one thing they all have in common is the Shape (Ahua), Symmetry (Auaha), Detail (Mokamoka) and Balance (Toenga). That’s the most important component to all my visions and thoughts.
